Artificial intelligence will set new quality standards and will NOT be the salvation for Homer Simpson since people shall learn how to use it.
I found this highly thought-provoking article from theย Financial Times, “Will ChatGPT be Homer Simpson’s Salvation?” whichย sheds light on the prevailing perception of generative AI among individuals across various industries, including the legal sector.
Last week’s news was of a lawyer that defended his client using ChatGPT, relying on quotations from cases entirely fabricated by the artificial intelligence system.ย As a consequence, the lawyer lost his license, and his client probably lost the case.ย This incident raises doubts about whether generative artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT can truly be considered Homer Simpson’s salvation.
When I began my legal career as a junior, I recall being tasked with lengthy translations, which proved to be tedious and uninteresting.ย However, through translating contracts, I acquired the skill of drafting them accurately and efficiently, even totally from scratch.ย Nowadays, trainees no longer have to endure the laborious process of drafting extensive translations, thanks to tools like DeepL, which provide a preliminary draft that only requires fine-tuning. So, do trainees really need more complex tasks to learn how to draft a proper contract from scratch? Probably not.
Generative AI is gradually becoming integrated into our lives, necessitating the acquisition of new skills to deliver better services. We find ourselves in a transitional phase, and undoubtedly, some individuals, much like Homer Simpson, will find a way to coexist with AI in the short term. However, it is a long race, and the legal profession, heavily reliant on words, is poised to be significantly impacted as AI can easily replicate our work.
The worst mistake we can make is to compete against machines. Instead, we should strive to exploit them to provide a better service to clients.
The emergence of Generative AI has elevated the bar of excellence.ย But this is just a new test for the application of Darwin’s law of natural selection, if you are an Homer Simpson, you cannot feel comfortable anyway, even after generative artificial intelligence.
